Matthew Hamel

Chesapeake City Council voted on Nov. 15 to fill a vacancy caused by Councilman Matt Hamel’s resignation as commonwealth attorney. Hamel, who was elected in November, had to resign his seat by Dec. 31. The council fills vacancies by a majority vote of the remaining council members within 30 days of Hamel’s resignation. The new council member will serve until the next general election.

During the Republican primary, Hamel defeated former employee Corrie Cring and advanced to the general election. Hamel did not complete Ballotpedia’s 2021 Candidate Connection survey but received 64% of the vote. While Hamel won the Republican primary, his opponent Shelly Fularon Wood finished second with 16% of the vote. The following candidates ran in the general election:

Amy Floriano
